As a brief reminder on the background of the project: after several years of campaigning, last year Ribble Rivers Trust was successful in our application for Bathing Water Status at Edisford Bridge.

The term ‘Designated Bathing Water’ doesn’t automatically mean it’s safe to go in the water, it means that bacteria harmful to human health (such as E. coli andIntestinal enterococci) are monitored during the bathing season by environmental agencies, and information on the water quality is displayed publicly. This allows river users to make informed decisions about getting in the water and potential risks.

After its first year of testing, Edisford Bridge has been rated poor. While this might sound concerning, it doesn’t mean swimming is banned. Instead, it highlights the urgent need for improvements and more funding is now available to identify and tackle pollution.
