Ribble Rivers Trust has been commissioned by Natural England to carry out a detailed assessment of nature-based volunteering in East Lancashire, with a particular focus on the role of voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations.

Volunteering plays a vital part in both individual wellbeing and community resilience. While the benefits of giving time to nature and others are clear, research shows that volunteering rates are in decline; particularly among younger people, disabled individuals, and minority ethnic groups. Our report aims to increase our understanding of these trends, highlight the work already underway, and identify ways to increase participation in inclusive and meaningful ways.

Cleans ups are one example of the Nature-Based Volunteering we offer in East Lancashire

Through a combination of literature review, desktop research, and stakeholder engagement, we found that:

  • Nature-based volunteering is growing, despite wider declines- especially in activities like conservation, tree planting, and community gardening.
  • East Lancashire boasts a rich variety of green spaces, from local parks to rural riversides. However access is not always equal, especially in disadvantaged communities.
  • VCFSE organisations are key to delivering grassroots nature engagement, with strong networks already supporting activities like environmental education, outdoor sports, and faith-led community work.
  • Barriers remain, including lack of awareness, transport, confidence, appropriate clothing and equipment, and volunteer roles that don’t always feel accessible or welcoming.

Our recommendations include improving infrastructure and accessibility, creating culturally sensitive programmes, and working with schools, colleges, and health providers to embed nature into everyday lives. We also highlight the need for sustainable funding, better promotion of opportunities, and stronger partnerships across sectors.

By supporting and investing in this vibrant sector, we can unlock the potential of nature-based volunteering to improve lives, strengthen communities, and restore the landscapes we all depend on.
