Our Education Officers have been very busy deliver

Our Education Officers have been very busy delivering trout eggs to classrooms across the Ribble Catchment this week. They have visited eight schools so far and have two left, scheduled for today but dependent on what state Storm Christoph has left the roads in.

If you look closely at this photo, you will see two little black dots on some of the eggs. This is because the eggs are in the 'eyed' stage and those black dots are the eyes of the young trout inside the egg. At this stage you can sometimes see the heart beating as well!

As you can see from this film taken on the Hodder at Newton in Bowland, there is a huge volume of water in our rivers. These scenes were filmed by one of our team, who was travelling for work.

Today’s #WildlifeWednesday is all about what happens to wildlife when the water freezes. This photo is of one of the wetland ponds we installed as part of the habitat creation project we carried out near Bond Beck in Tosside. It completely froze over during the freezing spell we had last week, as did the other three ponds.

In Winter some water bodies can freeze, such as lakes and ponds, due to temperatures of 0 degrees Celsius and below. As water cools and reaches freezing point, the molecules slow down so much that they stop and form ice. Water expands as it freezes, leaving larger spaces between the molecules and giving ice a lower density than water and meaning that ice can float on water. It is much harder for moving water, such as that in rivers and streams, to freeze. In moving water, the size, speed and temperature of the water, all affect the chance of it freezing.

As water temperatures drop in Winter, fish begin to slow down as their heart rate and metabolism decrease. During this time, they require less food and oxygen and generally stay low in the water, below the floating ice and where it is the warmest. Any surface water that freezes can act as a layer of insulation which helps to retain heat. Other animals living in the water like frogs and invertebrates hide underneath rocks and vegetation.

When water freezes, animals living on land need to find another source of drinking water to survive. Garden birds may resort to using bird baths that aren’t frozen for both drinking and bathing. Water can also be obtained by animals from food and from droplets off plants.

Welcome back to the first #WildlifeWednesday of 20

Welcome back to the first #WildlifeWednesday of 2021. This year we are taking a seasonal rather than species-specific approach to the facts. Today we will be looking at the seasonal activity of hibernation.

During Winter months, some animals retreat to hibernation. Here in the UK, hedgehogs, dormice, all bat species, amphibians, reptiles and insects hibernate. Most animals hibernate because food becomes scarcer in Winter so, in preparation, they use Summer and Autumn to fatten up and make sure they have enough energy stored to last them through hibernation. Once an animal is ready to hibernate, their metabolism slows down along with heart rate and breathing, using as little energy as possible. When temperatures start to rise in Spring, animals in hibernation begin to emerge.

❄️ While hibernating, a hedgehog’s heart rate may drop from 190 to 20 beats per minute and take only one breath every few minutes. Their body temperature also drops close to that of its surroundings.
❄️ After fattening up for hibernation, Dormice can become twice their normal size, but lose half of this weight during hibernation. Dormice hibernate in underground nests from October until April/May.
❄️ All species of Bat in the UK hibernate, usually entering their hibernation in November and don’t fully emerge until April. Hibernation sites can vary from buildings, tree cavities, bat boxes and more. Bats can sometimes venture out in search of food during the hibernation period but this uses up valuable energy.
❄️ Hibernation for reptiles is vital as they are cold-blooded animals and need warmth from the sun to survive. They enter a type of hibernation specific to reptiles called ‘Brumation’.
❄️ Amphibians such as Frogs hibernate in the bottom of ponds. However, common toads leave water to hibernate in dark and damp places such as leaf litter.
❄️ Insects hibernate in sheltered areas such as crevices, underneath rocks and insect hotels. Insects living in water hibernate in the substrate of the river, pond, reedbed or stream.
