Primrose Nature Reserve is one step closer to comp

Primrose Nature Reserve is one step closer to completion with the first section of bridge being installed!

The 5m bridge crosses over the maintenance channel, and will soon be followed by a 12m bridge over the main river, forming a path through the nature reserve from Woone Lane to Whalley Road.

The bridge is made of accoya, a sustainable acylated timber with a 50 year lifespan.

Today's #WildlifeWednesday is all about the Canada

Today's #WildlifeWednesday is all about the Canada Goose. The Canada Goose (Branta canadenis) is our largest goose and perhaps the most familiar to people. They are easily recognisable by their black neck and head, grey-brown back and white cheek patches. They are a common bird across most of the country, nesting on park lakes, flooded gravel pits and reservoirs. Canada Geese are not native to the UK, having been introduced from North America about 300 years ago. After the Second World War, they spread across the UK, becoming pests in some areas because they congregate in large numbers and can cause damage. In spring and summer, they concentrate their feeding on grasses and sedges while, during the autumn and winter, they rely more on berries and seeds, including agricultural grains. Despite being non-native, Canada geese are protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.

Nests are constructed on the ground, usually on a slightly elevated site, close to water with unobstructed views in all directions. The female selects the site and does most of the nest construction before lining it with both down and body feathers. She will lay 2-8 eggs and has one brood per year; she does all the incubation while her mate guards her and the nest. Canada geese mate for life with very low “divorce rates”. Hatchlings are covered with yellowish down and their eyes open and can be ready to leave the nest at 1-2 days old depending on the weather, then young often remain with their parents for their first year of life. Migrating flocks generally include loose collections of family groups and individuals. Flights usually begin at dusk and see birds flying both day and night, moving in a V formation with experienced individuals taking turns to lead the flock.

Today's #WidllifeWednesday concerns the polecat. The polecat (Mustela putorius) joins the stoat and badger as part of the Mustelid family and is roughly the size of a ferret, its domesticated cousin. They have an average body length of 32-45cm and tail length of 12-19cm; average weight of 0.5-1.9kg; average lifespan of 5 years in the wild but up to 14 years in captivity; and can be seen all year round. Polecats make their homes in lowland wooded habitats, marshes, along riverbanks and sometimes in farm buildings or dry stone walls. In the summer, rabbits are a major food source and polecats are slender enough to hunt them within their burrows; polecat dens are often found in rabbit burrows. In winter, common rats become a favoured food, and birds and frogs may be important in the spring. The polecat has a two-toned coat od dark brown guard hairs covering a buff-coloured underfur. They have a short dark tail, rounded ears and a bandit-like appearance with white stripes across a dark face. Polecats do cross with escaped ferrets and these crosses tend to have lighter, creamier fur on their back and more white on their face, which extends past their ears. Polecats have one litter of 5-10 young per year in late May – early June. Young are born blind and hairless and stay with their mothers for 2-3 months, reach adult size by autumn and breed at one year old. Males have no direct part in rearing the young.

Until the 19th Century, polecats were found throughout much of mainland Britain and the Isle of Wight. Habitat fragmentation, persecution by gamekeepers and being killed for their fur drastically reduced this distribution and, by 1915, the polecat was on the brink of extinction. The polecat population was reduced to about 5,000 but a recent recovery has increased this to more than 46,000. They can now be found in rural Wales and parts of England and Scotland. Road accidents are a major threat as polecats tend to be attracted to roadkill for food. Polecats are protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981, and are a Priority Species under the UK Post-2010 Biodiversity Framework.
