Penwortham craft gin boosting local Lancashire woodlands

July 1, 2021 — Ribble Rivers Trust are proud to announce that No.1 Fairham Gin have joined forces with the Trust as part of a new partnership.

Ribble Trust Woodland Officer Kristina shows Ellis and Liam of No. 1 Fairham Gin how their support will benefit Lancashire’s woodlands.

Penwortham based No.1 Fairham Gin have already made a splash in the gin industry with Liam Stemson and Ellis McKeown, thought to be two of the UK’s youngest gin distillers, at the heart of the craft gin brand. Combining a delicate blend of botanicals and exotics fruits through 100% vapor infusion for their Signature Edition release, the distillers have created a truly handcrafted, small batch, contemporary craft gin that has a unique smooth finish bursting with citrus fresh flavours.

No.1 Fairham Gin has put the environment first from the very start and now, as part of their environmentally conscious business plan, they will be buying a tree sapling for every bottle sold through the retail market. Each of these tree saplings will be planted by the Ribble Rivers Trust across Lancashire, which is one of the areas of the country with the least woodland cover.

The trees that are planted through this partnership will deliver a wide range of benefits, including creating new woodlands for wildlife and people to enjoy, boosting biodiversity, slowing the flow of water, reducing flood risk, and improving water and air quality. Perhaps most importantly, these trees will help to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere by taking the carbon in as they grow, which will ultimately help to reduce the effects of climate change.

By teaming up with Ribble Rivers Trust, No.1 Fairham Gin have committed to helping their local environment and the human and wildlife communities that call the Ribble catchment area their home.

Ellis from No.1 Fairham Gin explains

“We are very proud to be joining forces with Ribble Rivers Trust in their decade-long campaign which hopes to double the area of woodland across Lancashire. Liam and I are constantly looking at ways to expand our eco-friendly ethos and the idea behind the ‘one bottle = one tree’ partnership for us was that for everything we take from nature through the use of botanicals and exotic fruits, we wanted to give back, and what better way to do that than by helping communities local to us whilst also fighting against climate change.”

Jack Spees, CEO of the Ribble Rivers Trust adds

“Through the pandemic localism has become of far greater importance to everyone, from where you source your food and drink, to how you enjoy your local area.  This has led to a groundswell of demand from local people wanting more action to improve our rivers and wider environment.  We are really grateful to businesses like No.1 Fairham Gin, who are demonstrating not only a commitment to the local environment, but local communities.  We look forward to working with them over the coming years.”

Ribble Rivers Trust rely on funding from grants, but whilst grant givers fund most of our activities they don’t fund some of the vital work that they carry out.

Since 1997 support from businesses like No.1 Fairham Gin has been helping Ribble Rivers Trust to develop a more regular, reliable stream of funding which helps to create new woodlands, restore peat moorlands, remove river blocking weirs, and deliver national curriculum approved education sessions to children from a wide and diverse range of backgrounds.

As one of the UK’s largest Rivers Trusts, and one of the area’s leading environmental charities, Ribble Rivers Trust are in a unique position to be able to lead the way into a greener future for everyone. Corporate supporters are crucial in helping Ribble Rivers Trust to build on these improvements and ensure the area is more resilient to climate change, flooding, habitat loss, and declining wildlife populations.

You can purchase a bottle of No.1 Fairham Gin’s Lancashire craft gin on their website, www.no1fairhamgin.com. They are offering free delivery to the Lancashire area for a limited time only to celebrate the announcement of this partnership.

The Ribble Rivers Trust (RRT) is a local environmental charity established in 1997 to protect and restore the rivers, streams and watercourses within the Ribble catchment and to raise public awareness of the value of our local rivers and streams. The Ribble catchment is the area of land that is drained by the River Ribble and its major tributaries; the Hodder, Calder and Darwen. It covers a varied landscape, from the rural hills of the Yorkshire Dales and the source of the River Ribble, to major urban areas of Lancashire including Blackburn, Burnley and Preston.
