Riverbank Revival: A Journey Toward Community Transformation
We’re thrilled to share the remarkable progress of our Riverbank Revival project in Blackburn with Darwen! Our journey began with a passionate crowdfunding campaign aimed at creating a greener, happier, and more connected community. Thanks to the support of our generous backers, we’ve successfully raised significant funding that has enabled us to engage with various groups and schools in exciting and impactful ways.

Our crowdfunding effort was facilitated by the Save Our Wild Isles Community Fund—an initiative designed to empower local communities throughout the UK to take meaningful action for nature. With support from esteemed organizations such as the RSPB, WWF, and Aviva, this fund was established following the success of the BBC’s Save Our Wild Isles television series. Its purpose is to revitalize nature-depleted spaces and transform them into vibrant habitats, all with the help of local people like you!
What have we been doing?
Our project specifically targets the removal of invasive species such as Himalayan balsam and the introduction of native wildflowers to attract essential pollinators like bees and butterflies. Through these actions, we’re enhancing biodiversity and promoting a spirit of unity and positivity within our community.
Our journey thus far has been truly inspirational. We’ve conducted numerous hands-on sessions with local schools and community groups to combat the Himalayan balsam invasion in key areas such as Whitehall Park and River Darwen Parkway. These collaborative activities empower people, enabling them to take action while forging a deeper connection with nature.
We’ve also engaged young minds by creating native wildflower seed bombs with children at schools and community groups empowering them to spread seeds in their gardens and local areas (with permission). Ensuring that everyone can join in this uplifting revival!
Our commitment to community involvement was further showcased during a fun day at Witton Park, where we set up a stall and organized badge-making activities. This event was a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness about our project and inspire even more residents to participate.
Inclusivity is central to our mission. By collaborating with schools, community groups, and participating in fun days at local parks, we strive to engage as many people as possible through enjoyable activities and informative discussions about the significance of combating the spread of invasive non-native species (INNS) while encouraging the growth of native wildflowers. We are committed to ensuring that everyone can enjoy the benefits of nature right in their own neighbourhoods.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to building on our progress. We’ll have more sessions lined up with local schools, community groups, and parks as we continue working toward our project goals. Together, we are not only transforming urban spaces but also nurturing a stronger, more connected community.
Join us on this transformative journey as we collectively work toward a healthier, greener future for Blackburn with Darwen! Your involvement matters, and we look forward to sharing this experience with you.
